"You Need Music Powerhouses to Go Global" Joseph Matthew Schools Nathaniel Bassey
A Nigerian musician and pastor, Nathaniel Bassey, pleaded a week ago that Ghanaian gospel musicians need to write more English songs to be able to go global. He made this plea at the just-ended “Jesus Christ Encounter” event held at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 3rd, 2023. The story, which became topical among industry folk, got many supporters.
UK-based Ghanaian Afro-gospel musician Joseph Matthew thinks otherwise. In a new video he posted on his social media, he explains why a musician does not necessarily need to sing in English before going global and how musicians can actually shine globally.
In his presentation, Joseph Matthew looked up the literal meaning of “music” in the dictionary, which did not have any language factor in it. He further elaborated on why, as a musician, you should not be bothered by the language of operation but be perculiar and intentional in marketing the song. This, he said, is the hardest stage because, in Africa, there are not many’money-pushing’ labels that are willing to push gospel music in Africa to the apex.
The reigning “Uk-Based Gospel Song of the Year” winner further established how Burna Boy, although he does not sing entirely in English, is making waves globally because of the music label behind him.
