Daddy Lumba Biography
Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, often known as Daddy Lumba or DL, is a legendary Ghanaian musician noted for his exceptional abilities as a singer, composer, songwriter, recording artist, and producer.
With a career spanning three decades, Daddy Lumba is largely considered as Ghana’s greatest and most influential musician.
Many Ghanaian artists, including Ofori Amponsah, Sarkodie, Kuami Eugene, Paa Solo of the Sibo Brothers, Oheneba Kissi, KiDi, and others, see him as a big inspiration in the music industry.
Mr. Johnson Kwadwo Fosuh and Madam Comfort Gyamfi, better known as Ama Saah, gave birth to Daddy Lumba 58 years ago in Nsuta, near Mampong, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Both of his parents were teachers, and he is the second of three siblings.
His education began at Nsuta Kyebi, and he finished junior high school at Suame Methodist in Kumasi in 1979. He then attended Adu Gyamfi Senior High School in Jamasi before transferring to Juaben Senior High School, where he graduated in 1984.
Daddy Lumba’s singing career started off in the early 1980s, when he created the Nkwanta Wesley Singers and became well-known at the Anokye Krom Cultural Center.
During his time at Juaben Senior High School, he led the school choir and composed the song “Lumba Lumba,” which is dedicated to South African freedom fighters. The popularity of this song earned him the nickname “Daddy Lumba,” which he later adopted as his stage name. During his school days, he also formed the Lumba Brothers band, which included his then-girlfriend Theresa.
After finishing school, Daddy Lumba traveled to Germany with his high school sweetheart, Theresa Abebrese. There, he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, and they established another Lumba Brothers group, recording their debut album, “Yee Ye Aka Akwantuom,” in 1986. Financial difficulties delayed the album’s release until 1989, after which the pair separated.

Daddy Lumba then began his solo career, releasing his debut album, “Obi Ate Meso Buo,” in 1990. The album was hugely popular and critically acclaimed, with hits like the title track and “Theresa,” a tribute to his ex-lover. He has since released 33 albums, including significant works such as “Sika Asem,” “Aben Wo Ha,” “Wo Ho Kyere,” “Awosoo,” “Give Peace A Chance,” and “Ahenfo Kyiniye.” His most recent project, “Ofon Na Edi Asem Fo,” was released in December 2022 and reunited him with longtime collaborator Kweku Mensah.
In addition to his own success, Daddy Lumba is well-known for developing the careers of aspiring artists who went on to become superstars in their own right.
His contributions to Ghanaian music, as well as his support for emerging artists, have cemented his reputation as an iconic figure in the country’s music business. With his passion, talent, and dedication to the profession, Daddy Lumba remains a role model for young musicians, making an unforgettable mark on Ghana’s rich musical environment.
